More Quick Hits

* Nip/Tuck has some pretty strange storylines – remember the lady who sat on a couch so long that her skin grew into it? Well, we can always count on real people to give us stranger stories than fiction ever will.

* The ten most expensive cars in the world. Granted, the list is from 2006 but it’s still fun to peruse. There’s no way I would ever spend 300K on the hideous Rolls-Royce Phantom.

* Ukranian mobsters have some elaborately decorated tombstones.

* More evidence that real people are crazier than fiction. And here are a couple of characters that would be interesting to meet. Be sure to click on the links to see some more psychos with facial tattoos. Turns out The Smoking Gun also has a great set of mugshots. And here’s an elaborate way to kill yourself.

* Turns out Bill Richardson endorsed Obama the other day. Personally, I think his endorsement means more than one by a dinosaur like Ted Kennedy but I’ve always liked Richardson and think he’d make a good choice for vice president.

* WSJ had a decent article recently about how IT is still misunderstood and incorrectly utilized. EWeek highlights the most dangerous emerging technologies. Where do replies to donotreply domains go – and why do companies insist on using them?

* Some sports youtube links. Shaq clears the benches. Kobe throws a towel in some random lady’s face. Old-school sportsmanship. Top ten NCAA buzzer-beaters (it’s annoying how Laettner is number one over NC State’s title-winning shot). Top ten buzzer beaters from 2006 playoffs – love the crowd noise. Now for a slew of goal compilations. Random top ten of almost decade-old English goals (I love the number one goal). Mostly long-range efforts from the 06-07 season. Great Italian goals from the 90’s. Greece won Euro 2004 with inspired defense, teamwork and determination but along the way some great goals were scored. Pretty good compilation goes through a lot of (modern) legends though the title Best Goals Ever is a little over-the-top. I love videos like this one – all the goals plus some highlights from Euro 2000. Over the course of a tournament, you get to see all varieties of goals – from the incredible to the mundane to the WTF. France won the final by equalizing in the last minute of regular time then scoring a sudden-death golden goal in extra time.

* As a follow-up to my art post, I’ll add another in a continuing series of honorable mentions: Pieter Bruegel the Elder. I really like his style – almost a Dutch version of Uccello. Here’s his painting The Tower of Babel from 1563.

* And here’s a random picture of Scarlett Johansson, for no reason. It’s interesting how she can alternate between most beautiful woman in the world and really average (like in those Henry VII movie previews).

I think the probelem with the henry the 8th pics is that natalie portman was looking uncharacteristically beautiful and so scarlett just looked like a washed out white person in comparison. also, i have decided that she looks bad with her hair up, but good with it down (like in this picture or the Island movie)
